Restoring Mangroves in Nigeria’s Coastal Community, Esierebom

True ecological restoration is measured in milestones, consistency, and data. Following our intensive field layout preparations under the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) Restoration Stewards program, the Biodiversity Rescue Club (BRC) Nigeria has hit critical benchmarks in our ongoing mission to revive the highly degraded coastal wetlands of the Esierebom community in Calabar South.

This project update outlines our physical progress on the ground, the ecological hurdles we are overcoming, and the long-term management systems we have put in place to ensure these coastal buffers thrive for generations.


The Scope of the Esierebom Restoration Project

The Esierebom wetland ecosystem serves as a protective barrier and an economic engine for local artisanal fishing communities. However, decades of unregulated wood cutting and encroachment had left large swaths of the shoreline vulnerable to intense erosion and flash tidal flooding.

Our targeted intervention strategy focuses on complete habitat reclamation. This requires a precise, scientific approach to replanting and monitoring rather than just broadcasting seeds.


Concrete Milestones Achieved on the Ground

Through the mobilization of our passionate local youth network, student volunteers from the University of Calabar, and community residents, we have successfully executed three core project phases:

1. Strategic Replanting of Native Mangroves

Our team systematically populated the degraded shorelines with healthy, resilient native mangrove seedlings. We focused primarily on Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle), prioritizing areas experiencing the worst soil displacement to leverage their complex, anchoring stilt-root networks to stabilize the coastline.

2. Invasive Species Management

Planting native species is only half the battle. Our teams spent consecutive field shifts manual clearing blocks of the highly aggressive, invasive Nypa Palm (Nypa fruticans). By removing these opportunistic palms, we open up essential sunlight and space for our newly planted native seedlings to take root without being choked out.

3. Digital Mapping and Ecological Tracking

To maintain strict accountability, BRC doesn’t stop at planting. We utilize mobile ecological tools to map out our restoration zones and track seedling survival rates. This digital tracking allows our research team to monitor growth patterns, identify sections requiring reinforcement, and gather real-time data on how the ecosystem is recovering.

Community-Led Governance for Sustainability

The ultimate success of the Esierebom project relies entirely on local ownership. BRC has integrated community youth directly into our monitoring teams. By training local residents to protect these restoration zones from premature wood felling and teaching them the economic value of a intact, thriving mangrove nursery, we are turning local citizens into long-term environmental guardians.

The returning health of these wetlands will directly translate to stabilized shorelines, fewer seasonal flood disruptions, and a gradual revival of the local seafood and crayfish populations that form the baseline of the Esierebom economy.
